"The Evangelical Church in Jewell can trace its early roots in the town to a prayer meeting held in Samuel Cameron's home on the east Buffalo early in December, 1870. Meetings were held in settlers homes time to time. Attendants were nearly all Evangelicals. During the winter, among the attendants were Samuel and his wife Amelia, William, Amelia Bethada Cameron (Daughter to Samuel and Amelia) and D. J. Matter (1842-1919). In 1871 Mrs. Christena Elsesser Matter (1850-1904) and others came into the church.
The church was officially organized February, 1872."
"As his father, Isaac [Matter], had done in Illinois, he was a tireless worker in the organizing and building of the first Evangelical Church of Jewell, in 1873. He and grandmother were two of the 14 charter members of the church. David [D. J. Matter] was the first Sunday School Superintendent of the Sunday School and was a steward in the church for 45 years.
